I went to a repair shop and it was completely uneventful and cheap. I posted a while ago about my wife's Escape. I picked it up last night and it runs. I found the place just by googling and it had no reviews so I was a little nervous. the guy said his repair bay was empty and would like to just get something in there so he said $200 and to bring my own part. When I pulled the Escape into the bay I noticed the ceiling looked like it was ready to fall in. I hoped for the best and left. The next day I picked it up and he even gave me the old part for the core charge without me needing to ask for it.
and damn it was cold out this morning.

it was the alternator. I would have done it but the people in the YouTube videos started their videos with "this sucked this was the worst alternator to do ever". I found a guy desperate for work and charged me $200 and I had to bring the new part myself. In the end it cost about $350 which is a pretty good deal considering the other people wanted $500 - $700 parts and labor. Its back and running now.
